Marine Biology in Africa.... Africa has vast oceans for Marine Biologists and Oceanographers to explore and has therefore a very well developed marine science environment. From the tropical seas of the Red Sea, Mozambique and Madagascar to the colder waters of South Africa there are many marine scientists studying the wonders of this amazing underwater continent.
Marine Biology Educational Programs
The Department of Oceanography The University of Cape Town has a long and proud tradition as a center for marine research and for the training of marine scienctists. Over 100 marine scientists work in the Departments of Botany, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental and Geographical Science, Geological Sciences, Oceanography, Surveying and Zoology, many of them full-time researchers sponsored by outside funding organizations. http://www.uct.ac.za/depts/zoology/docs/marine.html International Ocean Institute (IOI-SA) IOI-SA was formally established in the Botany Department at the University of the Western Cape in early 1996, following the signing of a memorandum of agreement between IOI headquarters and the University of the Western Cape. IOI-SA operates a number of its own programs, and is sustained in part through linkages with other organizations involved in Ocean research and management in Southern Africa. http://www.ioi.uwc.ac.za/
Southern African Data Centre for Oceanography (SADCO) SADCO stores, retrieves and manipulates multi-disciplinary marine information from the areas around southern Africa. SADCO has been in existence since the 1960's, and in its present configuration since 1990. It is operated by the South African CSIR Stellenbosch on behalf of a number of marine organisations in South Africa and Namibia. http://fred.csir.co.za/ematek/sadco/
Association of Marine Scientists (AMS) in Madagascar
AMS is a non-governmental organization which aims at providing a common platform for marine scientists in Mauritius to interact with each other. The objectives of the association are to provide a forum for marine scientists to meet and exchange ideas, to promote public awareness on marine conservation and environment, to undertake activities which will help in better preservation of the marine environment, to carry out studies in the marine environment and in areas which influence the marine environment and to promote the sustainable use of the oceans and the environment for the welfare of mankind. http://pages.intnet.mu/ams/
AMS also acts as the local chapter of the Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA). WIOMSA is a non-governmental and non-profit regional organization for promoting the educational, scientific and technological development of all aspects of marine sciences throughout the Western Indian Ocean region. WIOMSA gathers and disseminates marine science information; it holds all types of meetings to foster marine science development and information exchange; and enhances better communication among the marine scientists and other professionals involved in the advancement of marine science research and development in the region. http://www.wiomsa.org/
Iziko Museums of Cape Town
Iziko, comprising fifteen museums and sites, each with it's own history and character, reflects the cultural diversity of Cape Town, the oldest city in South Africa. Many of the museums are housed in buildings of historical interest and importance. The exhibitions communicate across boundaries of age, class and culture and represent a rich resource for learning, exploration and discovery. Iziko, meaning "a hearth" in Xhosa (one of the main languages spoken in the Western Cape ), is also understood as "the centre of cultural activity." http://www.museums.org.za/iziko/
